Today I had my first day on my new job (Patient Care Assistant at Sunrise). They said they wanted to train me for a leadership position. We had 8h of training. The one thing I don't like about my new job is that it is 40 min commute and I absolutely dislike Utah drivers. There are those who think they have to go 80 Miles/h in a 65 zone, frantically passing you on your left and right when you are already going 70/75 (to fit in with everyone else and to be safe), and yet they are not totally aware of their surroundings and are a great hazard to the whole freeway community. Scarrrrry!--I am scared at least.

Gute Alte Heimat
I just discovered that my cousin has a blog too now (http://datengrab.blogspot.com).
How exciting. On it there is a link to Wikipedia, which--I could almost not believe it--has a posting about Lautlingen (the town where the rest of my family lives). It is close to Stuttgart, Germany. Here is the link.

hui buh
Noch eine Kindheitserinnerung. Ich habe Hui Buh verschlungen--allerdings nur per Hoehrspiel. Ich bin ein bischen enttaeuscht wie Hui Buh in diesem Film auschaut. Mein Fantasie-Hui-Buh war viel besser!
Another one of my childhood memories. I listened to Hui Buh (a castle ghost who is too scared to be scarry to anyone else) forever. I am a little disappointed about how Hui- Buh looks in this movie. In my fanasy he looked much better!

Asterix und Obelix!
Hey, ich habe im Internet einer meiner Lieblingskinderbeschaeftigungen gefunden. Ich habe Asterix und Obelix Comics nur so verschlungen. Dies ist in Italienisch, na ja.

Friedensglocke
Friedensglocke is a piece I choreographed for the children's and Youth dance company in Salzburg I co-directed 1996-1998. The performance happened right after a national violence awareness day in a public theater of Salzburg. Unfortunately, the videotaping is not done well in places, but I think with some help you all can still see what it was about.
The piece is about domestic and societal violence. The beggar in the beginning is ignored, business people walking through appear cold and have no time but to think of themselves and their business. Children at play are not noticed anymore. There is no time and friendship to play. There is strife and disagreement among individuals, couples, families, and in the end society as a whole. Society falls apart. Only war brings them together. They have noticed how far they have come. After everything has been destroyed, a hardened soldier is in charge. Everyone is hiding. But then the freedom bell rings (original Berlin Freedom Bell). People have the courage to come forth again and humbly give themselves to the common cause of peace. A child has the courage to confront the soldier and convince him to soften his heart, heal, and to surrender to peace as well.
The music is Sacre Du Printemps/Rite of Spring by Stravinsky. I got the recording of the Berlin Freedom Bell from the city of Berlin in 1996. The bell still rings in Berlin every day at noon. I have grown up with a lot of the history of Berlin. I have many stories of my relatives living there around WWII and some relatives still live there. My mother was born in Berlin and remembers the bombs of WWII. As a child, I stood in front of the Iron Curtain and was in awe that there would be a place in the world where people would be shot if they tried to cross the street. I was in awe that families would be separated by a wall. I was most touched by the sound of the freedom bell, which had a deep, satisfying and in a way calming tone. It had a most dramatic influence on me when I heard it ring over the city of Berlin that carries yet has risen above so many scars of violence and war.

Some of the kids participating in this video were not dancers and on stage for the first time. I would like to restage this piece some time and do a more thorough job. If anyone knows of an opportunity, let me know!

earthCries
earthCries is a more serious piece I choreographed in Salzburg, Austria in 1997 and restaged at Brigham Young University, Utah in 2000 with an ORCA grant for creative works. It went to the National College Dance Festival but unfortunately did not win anything--not to say that it would have won, but they could not get the lighting technology to work and that is a big part of this piece. I cut this video together from both, the Salzburg and the Utah performance.
earthCries is a neoclassic/contemporary piece about the last surviving creature of planet earth. The thought behind this piece was about where our planet and us would go if we don't take care of each other and some of the problems humans create for themselves. Nothing is left but shadows or memories of the past, a handful of dirt, and one creature that remains to tell about it. The earthling represents a mixture or remains of several different life forms (e.g. its movement has different human and animal characteristics).
Music is by Jean Michelle Jarre, a modern French composer who has given open-air concerts, which are called "Klangglocke" in German: A Klangglocke-concert is a concert consisting of several smaller concerts simultaneously happening in several different parts of one big city (like Berin or New York) so that the music forms sort of a hall over the whole city. Jarre, among other things, uses laser lights to create some of his tones.
